Open OSHA standard ↗The standard sets a small number of measurable requirements. EquipGuard meets each one. Use this table to walk through compliance with your EHS Director or an OSHA compliance officer.
| 1910.29(b) requirement | Standard | EquipGuard |
|---|---|---|
| Top rail height | 42 inches, plus or minus 3 inches | 42 inches |
| Top rail strength | 200 lbs of force in any outward or downward direction | Meets 200-lb force standard (2014 LOI) |
| Midrail | Approximately 21 inches above walking surface | 21 inches |
| Vertical opening max | 19 inches maximum between rails | Less than 19 inches |
| Surface and edges | Smooth, no projection or laceration hazard | Powder-coated tubing, no exposed fasteners at grip height |
| Gate at opening | Smooth, no projection or laceration hazard | Self-closing safety gate standard |
Section 2
Gather the five required measurements from the roof, then submit them online. No printing is required.
Manufacturer, model number, and serial number from the chiller’s data plate. This tells us the structural rail dimensions and rated load capacity of the mounting frame before we configure anything.
Length by Width of the unit at the base. Measure to the outermost point of the frame, not the cabinet. This determines the enclosure perimeter.
Location and width of every side requiring service access. Note which sides need a self-closing gate vs. fixed rail sections.
Distance and direction from the chiller to the nearest roof access point. This determines the safe approach path and whether walkway rail is needed between access and enclosure.
Location of any piping, conduit, electrical disconnects, or service panels attached to or immediately adjacent to the structural frame that would affect bracket placement.
Section 3
For the Plant Manager or Procurement team evaluating options.
If you are holding a custom fabrication quote in the $15,000 to $30,000 range, this is the comparison your Plant Manager needs. Modular and custom fab both end at a compliant guardrail. Everything between the spec and the install is different.
| Dimension | Custom-fabricated | EquipGuard modular |
|---|---|---|
| Design process | Site-specific shop drawings, engineering review | Standard component configuration with assembly drawing |
| Typical timeline | 8 to 12 weeks design, fabrication, install | Days to weeks. Two-person crew, single day on-site. |
| Installation method | Certified welders, crane, hot-work permits, fire watch | Drill and hex key. No welding, no crane. |
| Attachment point | Welded or bolted to supporting structure. May penetrate roof. | Brackets bolt to chiller’s factory-rated structural frame. No roof attachment, no roof penetration. |
| Chiller independence | Rail attached to building structure. Requires coordinated install. | Rail mounts to chiller frame. Moves with the unit if relocated. |
| OSHA compliance | Compliant when properly engineered | Compliant under 1910.29(b). Confirmed by 2014 OSHA LOI. |
| Roof warranty impact | Risk of voiding warranty if penetrations involved | No roof penetration. Membrane stays intact. |
| Chiller replacement | Cut down and scrap | Disassemble from old unit. Reconfigure for new unit. |
| Typical cost | $15,000 to $30,000 or more (Dakota Safety market observation from quote history) | Varies with chiller footprint; scoped from your five measurements. |

Practical product proof
EquipGuard mounts directly to the chiller’s structural frame, helping protect service personnel without roof penetrations. Its modular components can be configured around equipment access points and reconfigured when site needs change.
